Emerging Leaders Retreat Program Coordinators
Think you have what it takes to plan a retreat for 50 freshmen? We'll show you how it's done!
The Emerging Leaders Retreat is designed to take 50 first year students to a place off campus and get them ready for leadership opportunities that will come their way. In addition to leadership, we also designed the retreat to include coping mechanisms for the stress that accompanies college and provide a social support network for first year students. Experienced student leaders to come and share their wisdom with these first year students. In addition, we also bring in professionals to perform workshops on various topics. The group leaves for the retreat on Friday evening and returns after lunch on Sunday afternoon.
The Program Coordinators (PCs) are instrumental in the planning of the event as well as many facets of the event that will be most visible to everyone. Each year, we look for 5 enthusiastic, committed students who'd like to participate. Holding prior leadership positions is not a prerequisite! These positions are opened to all undergraduate students, including transfer students & continuees, whether they have attended the retreat in the past or not. Individuals who apply for this position should be able to work autonomously as well as within a small and large team setting. The duties of a Program Coordinator are listed below:
- Serve as informal mentors and role models for the students you will be working with;
- Assist these students by helping them get involved in off and on campus organizations;
- You must commit to being at the overnight retreat;
- Pre-Retreat planning, idea generation and organization (including but not limited to coordination of schedule, theme development) to begin in the first week of February;
- Lead large and small groups in ice breakers, team builders and informational sessions;
- Assist, as needed, in the ropes course activities;
- Brainstorming improvements based on your past retreat experiences;
- Have approximately a 3-4 hour per week for retreat related meetings and activities;
- Attend and help with the planning of 1-2 reunion activities;
- Email access for communication over the summer months is a plus, but not a necessity;
- Assist with the selection of the next set of Program Coordinators.
The PC application is generally made available in September and is due in late October. Interviews usually take place before Thanksgiving.
