Staff and Faculty Advisors
All student organizations are chartered by the Student Government Association (SGA). The SGA requires that each student organization have an advisor who is a staff or faculty member of Emory University. The staff or faculty advisor cannot be employed by or benefit from the actions of a student organization which he or she advises.
The Office of Student Leadership & Service is here to aid staff and faculty advisors in their work with student organizations.
No matter how long you have been an Advisor, our Advisors Roundtables (anchor to Advisors Workshops, below) may be especially beneficial for you. Also, the OSLS produces an Advisor's Manual, which is updated annually.
If you have been contacted because you are listed as an advisor, and you never agreed to be, or you no longer wish to be a student organization advisor, please contact the SGA Office at 404.727.6179 or email Laura Rogers Reece at Laura.Reece@emory.edu.
Advisors Manual
Advisors wear many hats, when working with student organizations. Advisors serve as resources and help students learn lessons and make decisions. Here are a few additional roles that Advisors play, taken directly from the Advisors Manual (link to that document).
Advisors should:
- Communicate with his or her student organization, at least once per semester.
- Role model honesty and integrity by following established laws or procedures.
- Provide feedback or help the group develop their own opinions about actions or events.
- Share knowledge of University policies, resources and relevant past experiences.
- Be available to the group you advise.
- Remember that the management of the group (programmatically and financially) remains with the student leaders within the group. Advisors can offer suggestions but they should not be responsible for doing work for the students, signing contracts for the organization or have a prominent role in any of the finances.
If you are an Advisor and would like to be added to the Advisors Listserv, please contact Laura Rogers Reece in the SGA Office at 404.727.6179 or Laura.Reece@emory.edu.
