Your Advisor
The Student Government Association (SGA) requires all student organizations to have a faculty or staff advisor. Student organization advisors encourage students to become accountable and responsible for their actions within an organization. Advisors attempt to educate students in the area of programming with regard to planning, evaluating, and developing activities. They also advise student groups about University procedures.
While advisors are available and willing to help student organizations, the management of the group remains with the student leaders. Advisors may offer suggestions, make recommendations, provide students with resources, and act as consultants in their area of expertise. However, advisors should not be responsible for doing work for the students or signing contracts for the organization. The students within the organization should retain all control over the affairs (including financial) of the organization. The Office of Student Leadership & Service has a resource booklet for advisors. If your organization need help finding an advisor, please review our suggestions for finding a new advisor and be sure to contact the SGA office at 727-6179.
Please remember that Advisors are here to be guides & help you think through the ramification of decisions. Your Advisor wants your organization to succeed. Here are some easy ways to ensure that you are maximizing your relationship with your Advisor:

- Ask them for help! Consider their point of view if they offer it.
- Add the advisor to your LearnLink conference or list serv.
- Make sure they have a roster of all the members, a list of officers and a copy of your constitution.
- Ask them how they would like to be involved. If they have not worked with you before, they may know be sure of when to speak up- ask for his or her opinion.

- Be sure to personally invite them (and a guest) to your events, at least 2 weeks ahead of time.
- Tell them when your elections are and make sure they know the results.

Some tips to consider if your organization needs a new advisor:
- Consult the University directory to see the names of staff and faculty who may work in a specific discipline that is related to your organization's purpose.
- Speak to faculty & staff members that you know! Explain your organization's purpose and ask them if they have any colleagues who may be interested in working with your group.
- Follow your instincts: if you can sense that one potential advisor is more excited about working with you than another, consider working with the person who has more enthusiasm.
