Special Note from our Dean of Students, Dr. Kristina Bethea Odejimi, Ph.D.
Dear Student Leaders,
This week, President Fenves shared key actions Emory is taking to prepare for potential budget constraints. In his message, he highlighted Emory’s commitment to maintaining a vibrant and inclusive campus environment.
At Emory, the health and vitality of our recognized student organizations is a core component of our community. Your work as student leaders, in partnership with Student Involvement, Leadership and Transitions (SILT), enhances the energy and enthusiasm that activates the student experience.
I want to affirm our commitment to you and your organization's ability to program and contribute to student life. Through our expansion of our student-facing staff, investments in technology, enhancement of student-leader training and streamlining of processes, we are well positioned to continue to work with you to maximize your impact on campus.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me.
Sincerely,
Dean Odejimi

Whether you are seeking warm weather or snow-capped climates, it is important to prioritize your personal safety while recognizing you are a guest in your destination.
- Know the Rules and Regulations
The place(s) you visit can have laws different from Atlanta. Get familiar with the rules for spring breakers including open container/alcohol consumption, curfews, amplified sound, prohibited items, gathering rules, garbage disposal and other environmental impacts for where you are visiting.
-
Be Vigilant About Your Safety Lock door in hotels, travel with a buddy, share your locations, don’t get in non-Uber/Taxis with folks you do not know, and do not leave with strangers. Be cautious about revealing personal information and be mindful of your surroundings.
-
Know Your Limits Follow the laws around alcohol consumptions and practice safe drinking. Only accept drinks that you’ve watched get made and watch your cup/glass. Follow best practice guidance such as:
-
Limit drinking to one standard drink per hour
-
Have no more than 3 standard drinks in one occasion
-
Alternate alcoholic drinks with non-alcoholic drinks like water
-
Avoid mixing alcohol with drinks that contain caffeine
-
Sip, don’t chug your beverages
-
Eat before and/or during drinking
-
Keep Your Belongings Close
Always keep valuables secure and with you. Bring extra charges and carry cash and important phone numbers in case you lose your phone.
-
Know Environmental Impacts Be aware of the locals – and their natural habitats. For some creatures and critters, Spring Break takes place during nesting or migration seasons. Interacting with or endangering animals may be regulated.
-
Hydrate and Wear Sunscreen Sand or slopes, too much time in the sun can leave you dehydrated with an increased risk of sunburns. Take your SPF and a bottle of water wherever you go.
If you need help, ask for it. If there’s an emergency, don’t delay to call 911 or rely on a bystander to call for help. Call for help yourself to be sure first responders or police get the message.

Enjoy the break, recharge, and come back ready to finish the semester strong!
