Sex and Gender-Based Harassment and Discrimination Policy (Interpersonal Violence)

Emory University is committed to maintaining an environment that is free of unlawful harassment and does not discriminate on the basis of sex within its educational programs and activities.

Thus, in accordance with federal law and its commitment to a fair and open campus environment, Emory cannot and will not tolerate discrimination against or harassment of any individual or group based upon race, sex, color, religion, ethnic, or national origin, genetic information, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, veteran's status, or any factor that is a prohibited consideration under applicable law. The university recognizes its responsibility to increase awareness of sex discrimination, prevent its occurrence, and diligently investigate reports of misconduct.

There are several resources for Recognized Student Organizations to utilize as it relates to Interpersonal Violence and Harassment within the organization.

The Office of Respect

  1. The Office of Respect is to work with key stakeholders to eradicate sexual assault, sexual harassment, stalking, and intimate partner violence to create a safer, healthier campus where all students can learn, grow, and thrive. This occurs through education, bystander intervention training, crisis intervention, advocacy, policy development, and supportive peer networks.
  2. In support of this mission, we offer 24-hour support resources for Emory students impacted by interpersonal violence. We aim to provide support; help students learn about their options and rights; assist with safety planning; provide legal and medical accompaniment; and/or offer academic assistance.
  3. If you would like to speak with an advocate for support, please call the 24/7 Respect Hotline: 404-727-1514.

The Title IX Office

  1. If you would like to file a report of sexual misconduct, please click here. You will be redirected to an online reporting form. The Department of Title IX will receive your form upon submission and will contact you to discuss resources, supportive measures, and the complaint process.

Your Advisor and Organizational Constitution

  1. Always use your organizational advisor if there are any issues within the organization, but please know advisors are mandated reporters and are, by law, obligated to report any issues related to interpersonal violence.
  2. For confidential support, please contact the Office of Respect.
  3. The organization should not in any manner attempt to internally adjudicate any allegations of interpersonal violence as it relates to members.  This is the role of the university and by law assures anyone involved is afforded proper due process.
  4. Your constitution should, however, also be equipped with statements of membership requirements as well as means and procedures to remove officers from positions or members from the organization should a situation be warranted based on your organization’s governing document.
